About Discovery Academy

We help students set goals and develop pride in their accomplishments while encouraging them to build connections with their peers. Nowhere else in the area, public or private, can you find such a unique blend of academics, creative expression, and an eclectic and individualized curriculum.

Our History

Discovery Academy was founded in 1986 by Dan and Teresa Lewis, who shared a dream and a desire to provide a true alternative to mass education. Their goal was to help students develop critical thinking skills that would not only assist them in the memorization of facts, but in the acquisition of new information and the ability to test and develop their own theories.

Let no child be demeaned nor have his wonder diminished because of our ignorance or inactivity. Let no child be deprived of discovery because we lack the resources to discover his problem. Let no child ever doubt himself or his mind because we are unsure of our commitment.”

Teresa Lewis, Founder of Discovery Academy

Our Philosophy

We encourage thinkers and daydreamers to never be content with the status quo. Our students are “doers” in the laboratory of life, not content to contain their learning to the confines of four walls. The innovators have always been those who questioned facts, who thought and dreamed beyond them.

Discovery Academy was designed to be a fresh and lively place–where you’re energized, student and teacher alike–and when you walk in you never quite know what to expect and the place is jumping. Not in a loud or out-of-control way, but with a focused enthusiasm for learning, complete with hands-on materials that they can use to test their own hypotheses.

Collaboration with Families

We find that when parents, teachers and children communicate, share ideas, and lend support to one another, we are able to do a more effective job of raising a generation of children who will feel more secure and have a better sense of who they are. Together, we really can make a positive difference in helping to shape the future of your children.

Please remember that the foundation for building good relationships starts here, and the best example for relationship building comes from you as parents and from us as educators. We look forward to our partnership with you in this adventure!
